Early life and career

After graduating from the University of Sussex, Hoffman lectured in the subject of Ecology at the University of Wales. Later Hoffman would say he discovered that “Herbalism is ecology in practice”.[1]

His introduction to the world of herbalism began when friends suggested a herbal tea made with valerian to ease his sleeping troubles. The transforative sleep following the herbal tea piqued an interest that put him on the path to a lifetime's work with medicinal herbs.[1]

Hoffman opened his first herbal practice in 1978, aged 27.[1]

In 1983, Hoffman dabbled in British politics, running for Parliament for the Green Party.[1][2]

In 1985 whilst on a trip to California, Hoffman met herbalist Rosemary Gladstar, who offered him a teaching position at the California School of Herbal Studies. This began his move from clinical herbalist to educator.[1]

Staying in the US, in 1987, Hoffman became the Director of the California School of Herbal Studies and helped co-found the American Herbalists Guild. He became president of this guild in 1989.[1]

He currently works for the advisory boards of the American Botanical Council and United Plant Savers, and teaches both at the California School of Herbal Studies and at Bastyr University.[2]
